This week I came across a number of interesting books on the new book shelf to add to my TBR list. I almost never read nonfiction, but these titles looked so intriguing. The first is David McCullough’s The American spirit: who we are and what we stand for. A slight volume, McCullough’s newest title is a collection of speeches he has given over the years which illuminate the topic. Next to this title was a juvenile book by Patricia McCormick called The plot to kill Hitler : Dietrich Bonhoeffer: pastor, spy, unlikely hero. Written in clear, straightforward language, this title for teens examines Bonhoeffer’s life and his conviction to expose and fight the Nazis.
On a lighter note, I picked up Entanglement : the secret lives of hair. Emma Tarlo explores the global world of hair including its cultural significance, the hair industry, and how our very identity is defined by hair. On the creative side, I also choose Reclaim that: upcycling your home with style. This title includes such projects as creating a headboard from reclaimed wood, distressing tag sale furniture, and how to recycle those ubiquitous plastic lawn chairs by painting them in bright colors.
