For this holiday week, Dorsch and Navarre branch staff recommend some thrillers. Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris is suspenseful and eye-opening. It's about a couple, Jack and Grace. He has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do. You'd like to get to know Grace better, but it's been difficult...because sometimes, the perfect marriage is the perfect lie. Catherine Steadman’s Something in the Water is also psychologically suspenseful. The perfect couple on their honeymoon find something valuable, and disturbing, in the water. But, do they tell authorities? Of course not. And, there are consequences to that decision. What would you do? It’s a perfect book discussion book! Another exciting title is The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald. It is about a pregnant daughter who is rendered brain dead from a fall. She is placed on life support to help the baby survive and her grieving mother notices suspicious injuries. She resolves to uncover the truth and makes it her mission to find out who’s responsible.
Are you a nonfiction reader? Do you like survival stories? Try Maid : hard work, low pay, and a mother's will to survive by Stephanie Land. Publisher’s Weekly says it’s a “beautiful, uplifting story of resilience.” In this heartfelt debut memoir, Land describes the struggles she faced as a young single mother living in poverty. Her daughter learned to walk in a homeless shelter, but Land found work as a house cleaner, moved out of the shelter, and built a life. Michelle Obama’s Becoming is also an inspiring read about her life from childhood through adulthood. Dorsch staff recommends Heart talk : poetic wisdom for a better life. It’s described by WorldCat as “a beautifully illustrated book from Cleo Wade--the artist, poet, and speaker who has been called "the Millennial Oprah" by New York Magazine--that offers creative inspiration and life lessons through poetry, mantras, and affirmations.”
