Newport recommends if you like a good mystery with a little romance thrown in, Lethal by Sandra Brown. It is about a woman who rushes out to help a sick man and ends
up becoming a hostage along with her daughter. From FBI offices in Washington D.C., to a rundown shrimp boat in coastal Louisiana, Coburn and Honor run for their lives from the very people sworn to protect them. They unravel a web of corruption and depravity that threatens not only them, but the very fabric of our society. Sandra Brown books are good for an “I didn’t see that coming” moment and this one is no different. Sue says, “It is an older book but one of my favorites.”
Newport staff think summer is a great time to read series set in Michigan. Some of their favorites are: the series featuring “Alex McKnight” set in the Upper Peninsula. It’s written by native Michigander Steve Hamilton. They also enjoy the “Cycle Path” mysteries set on Mackinac Island by Duffy Brown, and the series featuring “Abby Cooper” by Victoria Laurie that is set in suburban Detroit. They are very authentic because the author knows the Detroit area as she lives in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Sounds like some great beach reads!
Newport would also like to remind patrons that Playtime and Crafts for six and under are on Thursdays at 10:00am. Summer reading programs are on Thursdays at 1:00pm for school-age children, and there will be Water Games on July 17 at 12:00pm.
Not a beach reader? Do you enjoy a more serious book? If so, South Rockwood recommends Our Lady of the Lost and Found by Diane
Schoemperlen. It's an unusual novel based on a vision, and a visitation, of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Publisher's Weekly says, "readers who enjoy unconventional fiction will find food for thought here." Popular Christian author Jerry B. Jenkins offers Dead Sea Rising. Here’s NoveList’s summary: “Leading her first archaeological dig in Jordan to search for concrete evidence from the life of biblical patriarch Abraham, Nicole discovers a 4,000-year-old complex with ties to an ancient puzzle and modern-day Jewish-Islamic peace efforts.” Staff at SR also enjoyed the biography Crown of Blood: The Deadly Inheritance of Lady Jane Grey by Nicola Tallis. It examines the short life of 17-year-old Jane Grey who served as Queen of England for only 13 days. She was installed on the throne to further the cause of Protestantism in England and was beheaded for her role in usurping Katherine of Aragon’s daughter Mary. Of current news interest is Stolen: the true story of a sex trafficking survivor by Katariina Rosenblatt. It is the true story of one survivor who escaped--more than once.
